Lack of Focus: Tips for College Students with ADD
January 9, 2008 Posted in College
Navigating through college with Attention-Deficit Disorder, or any learning disability, can be really tough if you’re not enrolled in a school that has a special program or provides support services. I should know. I have ADHD (Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder). And by following this advice, I’ve made my college days a tolerable, and rewarding, experience:
Contact your professors immediately
That’s one of the first things I did when I got to college. I explained that I have ADHD and a learning disability, but that I’m a hard worker and will do anything to succeed. I also asked if there was anything I could do to make the class in question more manageable. Every professor responded, and were all thankful for the heads-up.
Don’t take all your hard classes at the same time
If you do, you’re just setting yourself up for failure. Take a class load that you can handle, and only take the really hard classes that you need. (Example: Don’t take economics if you’re an English major ‘ actually, just don’t take economics. Evil stuff).
Make a schedule
In college, teachers don’t remind you when assignments are due. I have a large white-board in my room where I post all of my tasks and their due-dates, so I am constantly reminded of my schoolwork. Create your own calendar system. And remember, Arbor Day is April 28th!
Take time for yourself
To succeed in school, you have to give yourself a break. No joke ‘ party with friends and get involved in campus organizations or sports teams that interest you. The key is to find the right balance between partying and school work; it’s different for everyone, so find what works for you through trial and error.
Keep in touch with family and friends
The people who care the most about you are the ones that can usually help you out the most. They’ve stuck with you until this point, and chances are they’ll be there after college too! Besides, as far as family goes, they’ve got no choice.
