Many things are determined by color.

You see people wearing black in a church, you know you’re at a funeral. The red and green of a stoplight tells you either to go or stop (please say you know which is which). On the athletic field, color sets two teams apart. And, in life, color could mean the difference between acceptance and persecution.

Color is woven into the fabric of Stillman College, a four-year liberal arts school in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Stillman was established in 1875 as a training school for black male ministers, and ever since it has been dedicated to increasing employment opportunities for young African-Americans.
On the football field there are only two colors that matter at Stillman: Navy Blue and Old Gold, the school colors. When the Tigers take the field in their uniforms and helmets, they all look the same, with only the numbers on the players’ backs acting as a guide.

Once the helmets come off, however, you may notice something different about No. 12 (Sean Reck) and No. 17 (Kevin Flemming). These two players are, as one source told me, ‘two stars in a night sky.’

Try as I might, I just can’t keep my fridge looking nice.

For one thing, it’s small and has to house two sets of foodstuffs (me and my roommate’s), and for another, it was already gross when we moved in.

Every once in a while the roommate or I will feebly attempt to sponge off decades worth of black stuff that better not be anything other than mold, or Lysol the whole thing in hopes of dispelling that slightly musky odor that just won’t go away, but no matter what we try, our fridge seems destined to be nothing but a crappy machine that keeps our milk cold.

Some people, however, love their fridges. Something about their fridges makes them proud.

So proud, in fact, that they want the world to know how deep their mechanical love goes.

University of Texas, Class of 1973

I chose Texas because ‘ I don’t know that I could have gotten into Yale, that’s for sure (laughs). I went to Phillips Academy Andover, so that’s a fairly rigorous high school experience. At the time I went there, the late 60s, it was cynical time in the Northeast and actually I wanted to get back home. I was tired of the weather; I was tired of the attitudes. I wanted to go to Texas where I felt more comfortable. So I only applied to there.

For Texas, I was an in-state resident, and my SATs were good enough to automatically get in. I’ll tell you, getting in early made my senior year in high school a lot more enjoyable. (more…)
