As reported earlier this year, Facebook has been rumored to announce an online music service to compete with iTunes and MySpace in the near future.
This just in: the “Facebook Music” platform will serve as the social networking giants first step into the music space.
The new platform is set to be announced at ad:tech in New York City next week. Leading up to this announcement Facebook has been holding top-secret meetings with high-level representatives at each of the four major music labels.
Here’s how it works:
Major and independent label artists and will register their sub-domain name through Facebook. Like “www.facebook.com/insertbandnamehere” for example.
On this page Facebook users will be allowed to become “fans” of the artist and connect to the media hosted on the “artist page.”
In the first generation of Facebook Music “fans” will be allowed to listen to artist’s music, watch videos, upload pictures, add music to their page, receive tour information and interact with other fans. Online music moguls, be warned.
Future generations will come quickly and allow unprecedented targeted marketing, ad buys and media promotion. Facebook is developing artist specific sales widgets to allow for music sales through the site as well.
This is only the first generation of Facebook Music and Zuckerberg has stated that users can expect future developments that include a head-on assault on iTunes and MTV, possible intergration with the iLike application and the ultimate goal being to consume MySpace Music – Tom Anderson’s bread and butter.

Let’s face it, music is about the artists and listeners. All these money charging sites are just as bad as the record companies. Myspace was revolutionary in cutting the slack of bringing music from artists to users.
If Facebook tries to earn a mass profit out of selling music..well then we have another giant capitalist, with no user added value.
Keep music pure and as far away from commercialism as possible. That way we can prevent low quality musicians from the charts.

Since MySpace is a spam wasteland (and has been for over a year) I’m all about Facebook Music. All money-mongering aside, it still sounds like the best way to hear music via social network sites.

If you want free mp3’s just check out http://www.sellaband.com .
Personally I can’t stand MySpace as it’s not very social, and also very ugly to look at and use. Facebook is much better, but I hope people don’t rely on it for music too much, as there are alot of talented unsigned artists out there who won’t be allowed on facebook. This is generally good news though.

It’ll be interesting to see if the widgets or apps do anything more than push content.
Most music apps currently just show a music video, which isn’t very engaging.
For another approach, see this new app for Alicia Key’s forthcoming album As I Am – it lets people share advice with each other:

I pray Facebook doesn’t allow people to add music to peoples profile that starts playing when someone’s profile is viewed. I cannot stand MySpace — open a couple of MySpace pages at once and you get a mess of a gazillion different songs starting to play over one another. My ears still hurt!

Why are you guys all licking facebook balls?
The myspace music network is far superior due to age but everyone knows its just a tool to get info.
This facebook deal sounds like a the new online record company business model, with crappy ads and no privacy..

everyone is going to be skeptical of facebook music at first (just like news feeds) but it will revolutionize the digital music experience. Facebook will not throw out a shitty product that harms their brand so expect this to be a very calculated release that comes in small stages.

I disagree with this Facebook Music shit. Face book should be a social network, strictly. Ok, they let high school kids join which is gay, but fine now.. I guess. Now music artists? To compete with Myspace? I’m sure there will be programs for Facebook to spam promotions and other garbage to Facebook users… users who are just on Facebook to socialize with their friends. We all should keep Facebook away from commercialized bullshit! It’s the biggest uncommercialized social network today and they want to ruin it! Them idiots won’t make any money!

Musicians want a site that works for them not profits from them. We are independently owned and although small, our members are extremely loyal and love what we’re doing.
