Don’t get me wrong, there have been tons of truly amazing football players in the ranks of the NCAA – but there are a rare few that deserve recognition. Some have committed murder, yet others have gone on to illustrious careers that led to the Hall of Fame – some have done both. Cheers gentlemen!
Top Ten College Football Players of All-Time
10. Vince Young -Texas
In the 2006 Rose Bowl, he completed 30 of 40 passes for 267 yards and carried the ball 19 times for 200 yards and 3 rushing touchdowns. Those 200 rushing yards set a Bowl game rushing record by a QB. He was named Rose Bowl MVP for the second time in his career.
9. Tommy Nobis â Texas
He averaged nearly 20 tackles a game as a two time All-American linebacker and made the All-Southwest Conference team three times. Nobis also played on both defense and offense for his entire college career, playing guard on the offensive side of the ball.
8. Roger Staubach â Navy
As a junior in 1963, he won the Heisman Trophy and the Maxwell Award, while leading the Midshipmen to a 9-1 record and No. 2 final ranking. In his three seasons at Navy, he completed 292 of 463 passes, with only 19 interceptions, and gained a school record 4,253 yards of total offense.
7. Johnny Lujack â Notre Dame
Lujack quarterbacked the Fighting Irish to three National Championships (1943,1946,1947), and won the Heisman Trophy in 1947. The three years between titles was due to his time in the Navy during World War II.
6. Doak Walker — Southern Methodist University
Walker did it all at SMU, playing running back, defensive back, passed, punted and kicked extra points. He was a three-time All-American and won the Heisman in 1948, leading his team to an 18-1-3 record in 1947 and 1948.
5. Tom Harmon â Michigan
The 1940 Heisman Trophy winner, Harmon rushed for 2,134 yards as the Wolverines running back over his career. He also completed 100 passes and threw 16 touchdowns. His greatest game was his last. Harmon led the Wolverines to a 40-0 victory over rival Ohio State with three rushing touchdowns, two passing touchdowns. He also kicked four extra points, intercepted three passes, and punting three times for a 50-yard average.
4. Johnny Rodgers â Nebraska
âThe Jetâ? broke virtually every Cornhusker offensive record, while twice being named to the All-America Team and winning the Walter Camp Award and the Heisman Trophy in 1972. In his three years at Nebraska, Rodgers established an all-purpose NCAA yardage record of 5,586.
3. Sammy Baugh â Texas Christian University
In his three years at quarterback at TCU, Baugh passed for 3,471 yards and 39 touchdowns. He was a two-time All-American and was the first passing star in college football history. The year he entered college the law banning more then one passing attempt per series was abolished.
2. O.J. Simpson â USC
O.J. won the Heisman Trophy, as well as the Maxwell and Walter Camp Awards in 1968 after setting the NCAA record for rushing yards with 1,709. He also was a member of the world record setting USC 440-yard relay team, and was the first Heisman winner to be elected to the Pro Football Hall-of-Fame.
1. Red Grange â Illinois
He only played 20 games at Illinois, but they were huge. He ran for 2,071 yards on 5.3 yards per carry, scoring 31 touchdowns (16 of which from 20-yards or further). Grange also caught 14 passes for 253-yards and threw for 575-yards.

Where is Herschel Walker? He single-handedly won Georgia the national title in 1980.

Where is Tommie Frazier? He single-handedly took Nebraska to 2 straight National Championships in 1994 and 1995

The only problem with Frazier is that he had Lawrence Phillips – not TOTALLY single handed, though I will give you props for the Huskers tie-in. It was sad though how his heart condition kept him out of ever really hacking it in the NFL…so sad

The other problem with Hershel – though I AM a Cowboys fan and enjoy the occasional bobsled, is that his competition sucked and the conference and schedule he faced was bush-league. I agree he was good, but we will never know how good he would have been against better comp – OJ wins though, sans bloody glove of course

You’re a homer. How is OJ#2 and Barry Sanders and Charles Woodson aren’t even considered on the top 10. OJ sucks and kills people.

Where are Charles Woodson, Barry Sanders and Archie Griffin? Griffin won the Heisman 2 times, Charles Woodson was the only defensive player to ever win the Heisman, and what can I say about Barry Sanders that isn’t already known?

Ummm… ARCHIE GRIFFIN, I hate Ohio State, but he is the only person in history to win the Heisman twice. That has to rank in the top ten.

Here’s an offer to anybody:
I will take any bet, on any college football game, as long as you let this toolbox make your pick. Herschel Walker not being on this list shows you that this Dewd knows zero about college football, which really isn’t a big deal. I guess you decided on these players after watching 10 clips of College Football History, probably hosted by Lou Corso. All I’m suggesting is before you post a list of the Top 10 College Football Players of All-Time, do us all a favor and please do some research.

Wow. The only two on this list who belong are Vince Young and Roger Staubach. Barry Sanders and Hershel Walker are easily top 5 locks. Tony Dorsett and Hugh Green are top 10 locks along with Archie Griffin.

I’m sure it’s been complained about already. But if you don’t put Barry Sanders on this list you are a fool. Not only does he deserve to be in the top 10 but he deserves to be top 3. Look at the stats… idiots

Sammy baugh what a joke sam Bradford had more touchdowns and passing yards last year than baugh had in his whole career
NO the list goes like this
1. Vince YOung- simply the best. the way he performed against USC in the BCS national championship game against the “greatest team ever”. He was more versitile than any of those other old timers and way better.
2. OJ simpson – most heisman points ever (2,853) should have won it twice but he got absolutly robbed after beating the heisman winner Gary Beban in the game of the century 1967 USC vs Ucla after getting a 64 yard TD run with 2 mins remaining to win the game. 1st overall pick of 1969 draft he was a first ballet pro football hall of famer in 1985. OJ got as many yards in one season in the pros as red grange got in his entire college career Red grange shouldnt even be on the list because he played in like 1920. He held the records for toudowns in season and rushing yards in a season both in college and the pros ;the only person who ever came close to doing that was Barry Sanders. IF the juice hadn’t murdered nicole brown simpson and ron goldman people whould still rank Oj among the greats if not the greatest. Sports illustrated already thought he was better than Jim brown just coming out of college.
3. Barry Sanders- Barry sanders is as good as OJ he was really the only runningback who could match him through both college and the pros. He had all the ability OJ had but he was 6 inches shorter so he could cut a little better. you look at the film Oj could do a lot of the stuff barry could do and he was 6,2! But barry sanders was f*cking awsomehe had incredible moves
4. Herchel Walker
5.Johnny Rodgers
6. Ernie Davis- Inspiring Story 1st African american to win the heisman
7. Archie Griffin
8. Roger Staubach
9. Tim Tebow- he will win the heisman a second time.
10. Jim Brown
11. Bo Jackson
12. John Elway
13. Marcus Allen
14.Dick Butkus
15. Reggie Bush
