XO Laptops: Give 1 Get 1

Talk about no child left behind: the creators of XO Laptops, budget laptops for children, are rolling out a campaign on November 12 – “Give 1 Get 1″ – focused on helping 3rd world countries become up-to-date on global technology.

American and Canadian consumers will have the chance to purchase an XO Laptop for $399 with a second laptop being sent out to child in a 3rd world country in need of one. The exported XO is tax-deductible and a remarkable deal all-around, considering.

I wholeheartedly applaud the reasoning and value of these XO Laptops. At first look, they look like cheapo Mac knockoffs, and they are…in their own charming way. Sure, I know that Macs are sleek and stylish while high-end PCs are stacked with power – but keep in mind that XO Laptops are for kids. The last thing spoiled, wise-ass 9-year-olds need is a loaded laptop; they just need a slab of colorful plastic for basic typing and surfing.

It’s funny: rich, high-society families will most likely turn their nose away from XO Laptops – and why? According to PC World, the laptops have been rated high (by regular kids, not tech junkies) for their easy-to-use interface and simplistic design. While it may run a tad slow at times, that’s expected with a budget model. If you think a 17″ MacBook Pro is worth buying for a young child strictly for aesthetic purposes, well…that’s just poor parenting, plain and simple.

So, why report on this campaign for kids on a college website? Simple: it’s all charity, baby.

Do you have a little cousin who’s not very computer savvy? Convince your Uncle and Aunt to snatch one up; you don’t even have to buy it yourself. It’s for a good cause, and lord knows you could use some good karma after banging your best friend’s girl.
