  According to Upton’s former high school principal “She took college-prep and honors courses and performed well.”
  Her mindless answer may have been the result of stage fright and the fact that she was trying to come up with some way of answering the question without stating the obvious and insulting truth:
  “The reason why one-fifth of Americans cannot locate the United States on a map is that one-fifth of the country is either stupid or completely ignorant of geography.”
  Although that answer is true, an answer like that would have probably destroyed her chances in the pageant, since she would be insulting all the stupid or ignorant people who can’t locate the United States on a map of the world.
  Therefore, a mindless answer probably did her more good than an intelligent and truthful one.

  How many of you pilers-on have tried public speaking even in front of a group of say 20 people? This girl was standing in front of a live studio audience under hot lights and on was on live national TV. She lost her train of thought. It has happened to people who are both older and more experienced (remember the Apprentice when it happened to one of Donald Trump’s head honchos during an award ceremony?).

  How many times have you people stood before a nationwide televised audience of several million people and answered a totally unexpected question before such a live audience? I haven’t seen one person yet who has criticized her come up with an intelligent answer to the question. As for me, my mind has frozen in job interviews before an audience of only 2 people. It could happen to anyone. Actually, I am sure she was aware that she blew it as she was trying to answer the question and she remained poised through it all.

  People are always waiting for someone like this to make a mistake and celebrate. She handled it with dignity and class saying she was overwhelmed and rolled with the punches. She made fun of herself and was strong. Now all the haters made her famous because she is now doing a geography piece for People Magazine, she was articulate and showed her personality on MTV and who knows what is next. She was an honor student in High School with a 4.0 average, president of SkillsUSA, and has a full acedemic scholarship to ASU. It was her first time on national TV and she froze ,she didn’t hurt anyone but herself. If I had a dollar for everyone I said Blah,blah,blah to I could buy the losers who picked on her a life. Kudos to Miss Upton for turning this around on the malicious mean-spirited thugs who’s thoughts are ghost written by some dork disc jockey. And I hope their sister,mother or anyone for that matter never gets stage fright and has to deal with people like them. And kudos to MTV,The Today Show and People Magazine for countering this culture of making fun of people.

  In spite of the fact that she has the physical attributes of an adult, this is still a child.
  It goes without saying that, she is utterly and
  completely disappointed with her answer, however,
  humiliation has yet to produce a positive result.
  Though amusing, most of these comments will soon be
  forgotten, except by Miss. Upton.
  This is not an excuse for the quality of her answer
  yet, how many of you have since sat down with your
  child & pointed the U.S. out on a map?
  Of course I understand that this country is just
  brimming with intelligence, and our representatives
  should exemplify this fact…but allow me to point
  out that our president is GEORGE W.BUSH.
