Where Are They Now? Randy ‘Macho Man’ Savage

Macho Man Randy Savage

“Oh Yeaa!â€? Whether he was dropping the big elbow on Hulk Hogan, hoisting the lovely Miss Elizabeth (God rest her soul) upon his shoulder, or beating Robin Leech at croquet, one man defined manliness in the eighties and nineties and that was Randy “ the Macho Manâ€? Savage.

“Macho Manâ€? Randy Savage joined World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) in 1985. His style was a combination of power moves, scientific wrestling, and aerial tactics that allowed him to believably compete with stars like Andre the Giant, “Million Dollar Manâ€? Ted Dibiase, Hulk Hogan, and Ric Flair, just to name a few. This style got its greatest exposure in 1987 at Wrestlemania III when his match with Ricky “The Dragonâ€? Steamboat received a standing ovation and stole the show from the main event: Hulk Hogan vs. Andre the Giant. Many wrestlers cite this match as inspiration for them to get into the business and though he lost the match, he won over the fans.

The crowd’s reaction to Savage was so positive that at Wrestlemania IV Vince McMahon decided to have him carry the company as World Champion while Hulk Hogan was filming a movie. Hogan would regain the title at Wrestlemania V one year later.

As a character he had a charismatic, bombastic, and at times volatile personality that would do anything to win. His personality was offset by his manager the often silent but lovely Miss Elizabeth. Messing around with her was a one-way ticket to the danger zone (see the video at the bottom) courtesy of the Macho Man. Savage went so far to defend her honor against Jake “The Snakeâ€? Roberts by taking a bite from a cobra in his bicep. How many men will do that for their girl?

In 1998 Randy was named Harvard Lampoon’s Man of the Year and he’s taken his personality to the acting and music trade. For years he taught us how to “Snap into a Slim Jimâ€? and as an actor, he’s lent his voice to several animated series. But perhaps his most visible appearance was in 2002’s Spider-Man. As for his music career…the less said the better.
Today, Randy has more or less disappeared from the public spotlight, but I believe its time for the Macho Man to make a come back. Randy Savage, we’re calling you out! Show a new generation of children how to be a man, a Macho Man!
